After listening to the Song Fu thing I mentioned a couple of posts back and looking at the Song Fight website, and thinking about the “fight” between Worm Quartet and Marc Gunn on the FuMP, I've had an idea. I think it's a cool idea. I call it Fumperdome: “Two FuMPs enter, One FuMP leaves.” What we need is a musical contest to prove who's the best FuMPer once and for all. The way it would work would be to divide everyone I could get to agree to do it into three groups: Core Members, Auxiliary Members, and Sideshow Freaks (because that amuses me more than Sideshow Members). Naturally, any competition between the Core Members would have to wait a few months until Tom Smith was able to participate, but if I could get a sufficient number of Sideshow and Auxiliary Members interested too, it could start earlier. My general on how it would work is like this: Each round lasts one month with two weeks for making the songs and two weeks for voting. Then either the lowest ranked performer or the lowest 50% of performers (depending on how many contestants there are) would be eliminated. Each contestant would have to make one song a month based on some arbitrary and possibly nonsensical rules created by the contest master (who would be me). All of the songs could be completely original or parodies (unless that month's challenge said otherwise). All of the songs would have to be released under a Creative Commons license just like on the FuMP. At the end of the competition, the top musicians from each category will face off in a final round to determine who's the best of the best. I don't have any money for prizes, so the winner would mostly just get bragging rights. I could send the winner some CDs or DVDs from my collection that I don't want. This would be the major sticking point in getting people to participate. Still, maybe I could get people to do it for fun. Anyway, the following people are those who would be eligible to participate in my “FuMPerdome Challenge:” Core Members Possible Oscar Raymond and Scum (They hardly ever post new songs on the FuMP, so I'd really like to see what they've got) Rob Balder Robert Lund (who is more than welcome to team up with Spaff) Sudden Death the great Luke Ski Tom Smith Worm Quartet Auxiliary Members Bob Ricci Brobdingnagian Bards (and/or Marc Gunn) Carl Hatmaker Carla Ulbrich Carrie Dahlby Eric Coleman Flibbertigibbet Hot Waffles Jonathan Coulton MC Lars Paul and Storm Positive Attitude Power Salad Project Sisyphus Seamonkey The Gothsicles TV's Kyle Sideshow Freaks (who I am arbitrarily limiting to those with tow sideshow posts and no Auxiliary or Core status and are in no particular order) Below Average Dave DJ Particle Scott Rose Soggy Potato Chips Veronique Chevalier Nuclear Bubble Wrap Art Paul Schlosser Derwood Bowen David Tanny Digital Laughter Insane Ian Jake Waters Curt “The Camera Guy” Odd Austin Aeschliman Jim Paquette Beth Kinderman PuddinG CapacitY Divergent Future 10,000 Lakes DJ S*** F*** Karl Brown stalkerwolfbreed Shmoolie Dino-Mike Automatic Pilot doctorfloyd.com (okay, I guess this doesn't really count as a band) Throwing Toasters I think that's everybody, though I may have missed somebody who should be there or added somebody who shouldn't. Now does this sound like a good idea, or not?
