I'm rereading The High King's Tomb by Kristen Britain, and I came across this line which perfectly expresses the way humans deal with the past:
Human beings are naturally flawed when it comes to time and memory. The past is forgotten, or it is believed bad things will not recur, and people become bound in their current problems. That which afflicted the grandfathers of their grandfathers is a distant, dim thing, and not as important as present concerns, no matter how trivial."
Also, I found a link to a rare guest post from Kristen Britain--rare because her online presence is almost nil. I really wish she had more stuff online, but I also understand what a drain on energy it can be to keep up even a moderate online presence.
On a completely different note, I just read the most amusing thing when I was hunting down the link to that guest post. In one of John Marco's other posts (the most recent one, currently), he pointed out this ridiculous quote from someone who was criticizing Sarah Palin as the Republican VP candidate. This person was concerned with Latino issues, and said, "She [Palin] is from Alaska. Does she even know where Latin America is?" I mean, come on. This isn't a political blog, and I'm not going to go into details about any of that, but seriously. If you don't like Palin, can't you at least come up with a better reason than that she's from Alaska? And do you really think she has no idea where Latin America is just because she lives far away from it? I live in Ohio, but guess what? I still know where Australia is!
