Margaret Kemble Gage:

Aside from dressing fabulously and being a total fox, Gage is often credited as being America's first female spy, when she passed military information to the rebels that she gleaned from her husband General Thomas Gage of the British Army. Sassy!
In hopes of looking somewhat fabulous myself, I snapped this little number up on Yahoo Auctions Japan:
Picture it with ankle boots, good hair, and possibly a beret. Sassy?
This article from Edwardian Promenade, an absolutely fabulous historical blog that all of you must go read NOW, deals with one of the most controversial historical issues to date: Edwardian nipple rings. No, seriously.
I don't know why the idea of pierced Edwardians tickles me so when I find modern body mod fanatics so trying. Maybe it's because in this post-punk/feminism/9-11/pick one world of ours, piercings and tats are so common they've become mundane; when even the dullest mall rat is sporting ink, suddenly leaving one's body alone seems like the cutting edge. In 1889, though, "bosom rings" were something novel and exciting, and just try and tell me you don't find the idea of proper ladies discussing their pierced boobs over tea even the slightest bit amusing.
"I say, Hattie dear, you've just had your nipples pierced, haven't you?" "Why yes I have, Mary." "Then surely you must know; Mrs. Higgins told me that the shifting of her bosom rings against her corset created the most titillating effect. She wished me to inquire whether you find them titillating as well?" "Oh most titillating indeed!"
Come on now. |
