Earlier than I had to, but there was a scheduling snafu. Heh. So I'm updating this journal.
Charles and I are looking for military static displays. Tanks or howitzers or planes on display in front of VFWs or in parks or similar places. We are looking for the stories behind them, why a group or community thought it important to acquire and display them. We started this journey this weekend, immediately running into a really fun time in Plainview, MN. We took our pictures and then went into the cafe next door to get to meet the community there, to ask if anyone knew the stories. It was sort of overwhelming - Saturday in a small down cafe is fun and busy and smells like pancakes and bacon. We sat down next to a really nice couple who didn't know much about the howitzer in their town but was able to introduce us to some people who *might* and who also had their own stories. Richard served in Korea, one of the 'frozen chosen' in the mountains. Charles told me later not many of them came home. Anyway, the WWII veterans in the cafe didn't really know anything more about the gun's stories so we have more questions to ask.
I did find out that the Army Reserves wants a brief report with pictures sent in every year, at least about the tank parked in Zumbrota.
So, I guess I'd like to know if you know of any displays like this? We eventually will do a couple-week Blue Highway Tour but not without some homework first! Thanks! |
