6:09, the clock read. Twilight.
It had finally come again. The only time I could leave the small house in Jasper, Indiana to venture outside into the inky blackness. In the twilight, no one would see the deep red hues of my eyes, the deathly pale skin, or the quick movements that my body made as I traveled through the town. I stayed in the shadows, until no one walked down the outer strips of the town. I breathed in, the scent of blood throwing everything off-kilter. It was hard to deny the thrist, but I managed too. Every time I went to drink, I would see my prey's memories, everything and it would blind me with self-loathing and disgust. I'd managed twice to ignore the memories, but they'd gotten too strong lately. I'd started starving myself, but it did little to quench my thrist. Now, I just feed off lesser beings, animals. Anything that no one would miss. It was easy in Jasper.

I stepped out under the glow of the street light. The second I did, everything changed. Everything I'd managed for myself ceased to existed. Because before my own eyes stood Richard.
