He doesn’t know if it is cliché, as a scene taken from a soap opera, or just his luck.

The rain pours down as he walks toward the apartment complex that towers up, big and white to the dark grey background.

The bushes are ill-treated by the big hard raindrops; they’re almost beat to the ground with each and every hit, and Ryo observes it.

No one’s out at that hour in the night anyway, not with such a horrible weather going on, and he doesn’t meet anyone on the still and empty way through the city neighbourhood.

Even the tiny grocery store next to a ramen restaurant is closed for the evening; the shop-keeper is an old man with white hair and glasses who never closes it except for special occasion, as his grandson’s baseball matches or big soccer matches.

The store’s colourful show cards announcing the special price on meat sways with the wind the rain causes.

Ryo sighs. And the rain hits the ground and swashes his shoes and trousers.

He’s shielded off from the water with an umbrella. Could the umbrella shield off emotions too?

He hopes he has another clean pair of costumes in his suitcase; as he takes down the umbrella and lets the water wash over him.

Clear me and cleanse me from this all. Release me.

Release him from his memories, from his mind, from his thoughts.

Thoughts about Michiru.

She was happy with her new life. Ryo knew that. And that had been all he ever wanted for Michiru. But it had hurt him too much to see her happy with others than him.

It was a feeling deep down inside him he couldn’t describe. When he had realized, one of those nights in their apartment, he had become her sadness he had tried to let her go.

He doesn’t know, where he stands in the rain, what’s best - if that had succeeded or not.

The hold on her had been removed and she had left him. Something had been kicked-off in her and she had with that Ruka gathered her strength to leave him. The doctors had heard their `conversation´ as they called it, when it was only Michiru telling him that this was the end.

But the feelings inside of Ryo was tearing him apart when he had heard her words – at one side, she wanted her happiness and if giving her happiness was to let her go, so be it. But on the other hand, he had thought that their good times maybe would out-shine the bad parts of their relationship and that she would stay with him. Out of pitying him or out of love; both worked, as long as she stayed.

These contrarious feelings was still fighting inside of him, as they did that hospital night, when Ryo stretches his hand up to feel the rain.

The raindrops crash into his open palm, and he closes it into a fist.

Michiru had said that they weren’t good for each other and that what they felt wasn’t happiness.

Wasn’t it?

It was the only thing close to happiness he had ever felt, and now it was taken away from him.

I’m all alone now. Where did it go wrong?

The thunder from the dark clouds surrounds him.

Somehow, Ryo can recognize it. From where, he doesn’t know.

The ironical with her leaving him in `a bloody mess´ doesn’t pass Ryo unnoticed and he sweeps with his fingers over the now healed scars on his wrists.

A part of me left with her.

He just doesn’t know which part yet.

And his apartment lies dark and quiet.

Someone’s knocking on the door.

Ryo makes way through his moving-boxes that still are standing in his hallway. He doesn’t walk too fast. He’s realized there’s more into life than running. At the same time, he’s realized life’s emptier than he first has thought. About his boxes; they were still not unpacked. They only stood there on the same spot, waiting for something to happen to them.

In the same way Ryo could agree with their feelings – if now moving-boxes could have feelings. He was also standing on the same spot as he was left, not unpacked with his emotions, and possibly waiting for something to happen.

And he hated it.

There was another knock on the door. Ryo, who had stopped and given his boxes a long look, continues his journey to the door.

One of few things that are packed up is a long mirror hanging on the hallway’s wall and he scans over his mirror reflection.

The hair is combed in its normal style, not a single hair shaft out of place, and over all he looks pretty respectable in the chinos and white shirt he put on after taking off all his soaked clothes.

Respectable enough for someone like me.

The door creaks a little when he opens it.

“Hello.”

Ryo blinks. Then he blinks again. But the person in front of him is still there.

“Hi”, he replies after some seconds in a polite tone, not giving away his confusion. “May I help you with anything?”

The boy on his doorstep looks down on a note he’s holding. Then he looks up again. He makes a “huff”-like sound and sweeps wet brown-dyed bangs that have got stuck on his forehead out of his face.

“Is it you who are Nishikido-san?”

“Yes, that should be me. And you are…?”

Ryo is taken back by the shy but wide smile that the boy makes before he makes a deep but quick bow.

“Nice to meet you, Nishikido-san!”

At his white sneaker-shoes, a pair of bags in an eye-hurting shade of pink stands.

“My name is Uchi Hiroki. Please take good care of me!”

It was just a boy.

Staying in his apartment.

Just a boy.
