I've been mulling this over for a while now, and I'm thinking of doing a list of all my favorite bishounen, complete with their archnemesis, a *brief* summary, my favorite pairing for them, and why I like them so much (aside from general prettiness, and the fact that they're easy/fun to write about). Usually only one per fandom.

DNAngel, by Yukiru Sugisaki.

  • Bishie: Satoshi Hikari/Hiwatari:Satoshi
  • Archnemesis: Krad:Krad
  • Favorite Pairing: SatoshixRisa:Satoshi/Risa
  • Short summary: Satoshi is a man of honor in a den of thieves. An ancient curse on his family has wiped out the entire Hikari clan, except him. He has come under the thumb of the vaguely evil Keishichou Hiwatari*. This curse takes the form of Krad, the semi-insane, evil angel who lives in Satoshi's head and makes him evil, who tries to force Satoshi out of his own head and rebuild Satoshi's body into his own, original form. This hurts. Failing this, Krad forces Satoshi to pursue and (attempt to) foil Daisuke's and Dark's (our heroes) plans. Sometimes this works, as Satoshi is a genius (graduated college at the age of 12), sometimes Satoshi manages to foil himself, and it doesn't. Krad is scarily obsessed with Satoshi, and from this stems most of the dark Krad/Satoshi fanfiction out there, most of which take place inside Satoshi's own head. Apparently, that is not a fun place to be. Satoshi has this sort of love-from-afar thing for Risa Harada, who is in love with Satoshi's rival, the dashing Phantom Thief Dark, who it is Satoshi's job to apprehend. Not to mention, she is beautiful, rather popular, and an (attempted) budding Phantomess Thief. Thus, she thinks he is evil, along with the rest of the fandom.
  • Why I luv him: because nobody else does. And I go for the whole "solitary warrior" thing. And he's all noble and self-sacrificing, even when the people he tears himself apart to help hate him. And let's not forget the whole "Hot Nerd" thing. Say it with me: glasses are smexy.

Fruits Basket, by Natsuki Takaya.
  • Bishie: Yuki Sohma: Yuki Sohma
    • And in his rat form: Yuki's rat form
  • Archnemesis: Akito Sohma: Akito Sohma
  • Favorite Pairing: YukixHana: Saki Hanajima
  • Short Summary: yet another one of the uber-angsty, zero-self-esteem-even-though-they're-gorgeous types. Acts all nice and sweet, extremely popular (especially with the ladies; he has his own in-canon fan club). Nobody knows that he is one of the thirteen Sohmas cursed to turn into one of the animals of the zodiac, plus the Cat, if hugged by a member of the opposite gender. Convinced of his own complete and utter worthlessness by years of torment at the hand of his sadistic ruler Akito, as well as his abandonment by his brother, Ayame, who is currently trying to patch things up, but to little effect. Personally, I think he would go great with Gothic, psychic, rather scary Saki Hanajima. I see her as a girl he adores, but fears her apparent disdain of him (she can be pretty cold), as well as her crush on his rival, Kyo Sohma's, adoptive father. But he'll win her over in the end, gallant as he is.
  • Why I luv him: gallant, willing to sacrifice his life for those around him, soooo many opportunities for teh angst, great potential for love stories and historical dramas. And he does the resigned, despairing glance/smile soooo well.

Samurai Champloo, by Shinichiro Watanabe.
  • Bishie: Jin:Jin
  • Archnemesis: Kariya Kagetoki:Kariya Kagetoki
  • Favorite Pairing: JinxShino:Shino
  • Short Summary: his story is about as tragic as you can get. After accidentally killing his beloved sensei Mariya Enshirou, who was ordered to assassinate him (Jin) by Kariya Kagetoki, who wanted to turn Enshirou-sensei's dojo into an assassin's training school and feared that Jin, then only 18, might stop him, he (Jin) became a ronin, met up with loose cannon Mugen and fiery teahouse girl Fuu, and the rest is history. Shino was sold to a brothel to pay her deadbeat husband's gambling debts. Jin met her the day before she went, and fell in love with her. He eventually helped her escape, but had to let her go, this time to a divorce shelter that would keep her for three years, at the end of which he would return for her. She was a damsel in distress, and he, her knight in shining armor.
  • Why I luv him: he's such a white knight at heart, even if he won't admit it. He's honorable and kickass and oh-so-cool and stoic and mysterious. Literally tall, dark, and handsome. Especially handsome.

Loveless, by Yun Kouga.
  • Bishie: Soubi Agatsuma:scarred
  • Archnemesis: Ritsu-sensei:Ritsu-sensei
  • Favorite Pairing: SoubixRitsuka:fighter and sacrifice
  • Short Summary: a man with no past (almost), Soubi shows up out of the blue one day, supposedly to help Ritsuka Aoyagi locate/destroy the murderer(s) of his (Ritsuka's) brother, Seimei. We find out that Soubi was Seimei's "Fighter," and Seimei Soubi's "Sacrifice," and together they were named Beloved. It seems that Soubi genuinely loved Seimei, but Seimei apparently abandoned him, then faked his own death. Soubi then becomes Ritsuka's Fighter, taking his orders and protecting him from the magical hitpersons that inexplicably keep showing up. The only thing we know of Soubi's childhood is that he grew up at least partially under the thumb of the sadistic Ritsu-sensei who abused him horribly, but apparently taught him to fight well. Ritsu-sensei calls Soubi his "creation," and brags that he is perfect. He (Soubi, that is) keeps saying that he loves Ritsuka, pledges his body, heart, mind, soul, etc. to him on multiple occasions, and doesn't seem at all adverse to grabbing a quick smooch here and there, but these might or might not be just more word-spells. But recent evidence suggest that he genuinely does love Ritsuka, who seems to be the first person to know him for any length of time and not try to hurt him in any way. *sigh*
  • Why I luv him: he's sooooo tormented. Literally less than no self-esteem, he seems to enjoy being in pain, or at least he thinks he deserves it. Submissive yet fiery, a perfect example of the Reversible Uke. He has a way with words (literally), he paints, he's wounded both physically and emotionally and needs to be rescued, he angsts like you wouldn't believe, gorgeous as hell. Therefore, a fangirl's dream.

First of the CLAMP crew: Legal Drug (aka Lawful Drug, Gohou Drug, etc.)
  • Bishie: Kazahaya Kudo:Kudo Kazahaya
  • Archnemesis: unknown. Sucks, I know. CLAMP does seem to have a problem with well-defined, fully hateable villains.
  • Favorite Pairing: KazahayaxRikuo:suriyo
  • Short Summary: semi-star of sadly truncated CLAMP series /Legal Drug/, which has also been translated as Lawful Drug or Gohou Drug. Unfortunately girly-looking psychic, whose specialty is reading the memories of people, places, or objects, especially if they have some sort of emotional resonance. The only person he can't read is his detested roommate and coworker, Rikuo Himura, a telekinetic. They work together in Kakei's Green Drugstore, and also take on "special jobs" to retrieve magical items (Kakei runs the "anything shop" mentioned in /xxxHolic/), which frequently turn dangerous, as well as giving the exasperated Rikuo multiple opportunities to rescue Kazahaya from the many stupid and potentially lethal situations he puts himself in. The main problem here is that our Kudo-kun is passing brave and deeply intuitive, but not exactly a tactical genuis.
  • Why I luv him: KAWAII!! SOOOOO KAWAII! And he's got guts, no matter what he looks like. He can really take a pounding; just keeps on going no matter what. Great for teh flangst.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, also by CLAMP.
  • Bishie: Fai(/Fay/Fye/Fae/Fyi/etc.) D. Flowright(Florite/Flourite/Fluorite/Flowrite/Floright/etc.):Fai
    • And with his wicked-cool tattoo:Fai's tattoos
  • Archnemesis (sorta): King Ashura:Ashura
  • Pairing: KuroxFai:canon
  • Short Summary: after being almost murdered by his beloved Ashura-ou, he sealed him underwater, leaving his own Chii (not the /Chobits/ Chii, but close) to guard him and fled to Yuuko's wish shop, wishing to never return to Celes, from whence he comes. He must trade the magical phoenix tattoo that Ashura-ou gave him (his most precious possession) for the privilege. But as ordained by "hituzen" (fate, inevitability) he joined with the archaeologist Syaoran and Princess Sakura of the Kingdom of Clow, who were looking for Sakura's lost memories, and the ninja Kurogane of an alternate Japan, who was expelled for being too violent and bloodthirsty. He is *always* smiling and usually joking or teasing the overly- uptight Kurogane (i.e. making up silly nicknames and draping himself all over the ninja), although this is only a smokescreen to disguise his extreme depression and guilt. Like most CLAMP couples, he and Kurogane outwardly irritate the hell out of one another (on one side, at least), but are obviously just trying to deny their mutual attraction. Adventures ensue, including a return to Celes and a revelation of Fai's tragic past, including how he accidentally destroyed the world he actually comes from, and his missing twin (who, it turns out, is the real Fai). In another adventure, Fai becomes a one-eyed vampire, and he must drink Kurogane's blood to survive, as it was Kurogane who made the wish to save him by turning him into a vampire. At least, pseudo-vampire. Kurogane and Fai have this hate/love/protection thing going on, and like most CLAMP couples (again), there are way too many hints and teases, and way too few actual declarations of undying devotion, etc.
  • Why I luv him: because he's sooo sad. Smiling outside, crying inside. And he and Kuro-puu (also Kuro-chan, Kuro-pipi, Kuro-rin, Kuro-woof-woof, etc.) may attempt to kill each other on occasion, they each obviously have each other's best interests at heart. Plus, Fai needs someone to cuddle him after the whole "everyone I ever knew has betrayed me" mess.

Last of the CLAMP crew, the closely-related Cardcaptor Sakura!
  • Bishie: Yukito Tsukihiro:Yukito
  • Archnemesis (sorta): Clow Reed:Clow Reed
  • Favorite pairing: TouyaxYuki:TRC vs. CCS
  • Short summary: Yuki-kun here leads an interesting life. Mysterious grade school-age children of both genders randomly become infatuated with him. Both his BFF and his BFF's little sister have enormous crushes on him, and it turns out that he isn't really Yukito Tsukihiro, preternaturally mild-mannered student and chef in training, but really just the extension of Sakura's (the little sister with the crush) magical Judge/protector, Yue. When Yue begins to lose his magic, Yukito begins, slowly but surely, to die. He is saved only by Touya sacrificing his magic, and thus his means to protect his beloved sister. At this point, Yuki and Touya finally cut all the romantic tension and declare their love for each other.
  • Why I luv him: Because he's not such an easy love as the others. He's helpless, clueless, sometimes gormless, and once or twice spineless. Honestly, I like him better in TRC where he's a dimension-traveling, king-healing High Priest, not a damsel in distress.

FAKE, by Sanami Matoh.
  • Bishie: Randy "Ryo" MacLean:Ryo
  • Archnemesis: Leo Grant:Leo Grant
  • Favorite Pairing: RyoxDee:mine
  • Short Summary: his mother was Japanese, hence his dark eyes and his second, perhaps more commonly used name, Ryo. Orphaned at age 18 when his parents, both art dealers, were killed by drug lords in a case of mistaken identity. He decided then and there to be a cop. Maybe ten years later, he was competent, diligent, an expert marksman, on his way to becoming a perfect cop. He transferred to New York's 27th Precinct, where he was partnered with the brash, loud, devil-may-care Dee Latener, who immediately developed an intense crush on him. A bit later, oh-so-cool Commissioner Berkely Rose sets his sights on Ryo (thus earning Dee's eternal enmity), and fellow officer JJ Adams has always been after Dee. Several gunshot wounds, shocking revelations (including the fact that soon-to-be Mafia boss Leo Grant mistakenly killed Ryo's parents, and has never really forgiven himself), and near-death experiences later, the boys finally get to "consummate their relationship" after SIX FRINCKIN' VOLUMES of teasing and near misses. Most of these near misses are due to Bikky, Ryo's adoptive son, who he picks up on his and Dee's first case together. Bikky immediately takes an (apparent) dislike to Dee, and vows to "protect" Ryo from his advances.
  • Why I luv him: my first official yaoi baby. Daring, daring me! This is one of those stories that you just really, really want to succeed! You want these guys to live happily ever after. They deserve it, dammit!

Gravitation, by Maki Murakami.
  • Bishie: Eiri "Yuki" Uesugi:collage of yuki eiri
  • Archnemesis: Yuki Kitazawa:kitazawa
  • Favorite paring: YukixShuichi:Y&S
  • Short summary: The quintessential shounen-ai story. Insanely happy, pastel-colored singer (Shuichi) falls hard for mysterious, cynical, drop-dead gorgeous (dead being the operative word) author (Yuki), hilarity ensues. Eiri Uesugi (his real name), now inexplicably grim and virulently non-receptive to Shuichi's affections, was once almost as bright and cheery as Shuicihi himself. Because of his non-Japanese looks, he moved to New York under the tutelage of author Yuki Kitazawa. Eiri develops a bad case of puppy love for Kitazawa-sensei, who uses this to gang-rape Eiri (along with some unidentified thugs), but Eiri goes completely psycho and kills the lot of them with Kitazawa's gun. He takes on Yuki's name as his penname when he moves back to Japan and becomes a popular romance novelist, still not really having gotten over Kitazawa. He is still bitter, depressed, cynical, and semi-suicidal when, six years later, he happens upon Shuichi and a page of badly-written lyrics. He and Shuichi shack up, much to Yuki's apparent annoyance. In fact, he is apparently annoyed with everything Shuichi does and says, usually referring to him as a "damn brat," even though he is only three or four years older. But even as he grumbles, shouts, and freezes his way through their relationship, it becomes apparent that he has begun to finally heal, at long last.
  • Why I luv him: My only seme! Like I said, this really is the archetypal yaoi coupling: pink-haired, purple-eyed, pouty, younger uke, and cold, brooding, secretly passionate seme. It can be a struggle to write him in-character, as being all sweet'n'mushy'n'stuff isn't really his forte, but we *know* that he'll be there to protect Shuichi if anything bad goes down. Sort of spicy on the outside with a sweet center.

Yami no Matsuei (aka Descendants of Darkness), by Yoko Matsushita.
  • Bishie: Hisoka Kurosaki:Hisoka
  • Archnemesis: Dr. Kazutaka Muraki:Muraki
  • Pairing: TsuzukixHisoka:TsuzukixHisoka
  • Brief Summary: This fandom, I think, takes the cake for greatest number of whackjobs and crippling emotional scars. Hisoka here is the scion (18th generation) of an ancient samurai family, but his strong empathetic abilities caused his fearful parents to lock him up, keeping him in total isolation for the entirety of his short life. One night, when he is 13, he gets out and witnesses Dr. Muraki Kazutaka (who is posing, as usual, as a concerned and kind-hearted M.D., to hide the fact that he is really a terrifying magician/serial killer), murder a woman. Muraki, having been found out, curses Hisoka to die a slow and horrible death, which takes the form of a long illness, and at the same time removing all of Hisoka's memories of of who Muraki is, and what he has done. The curse/illness kills Hisoka when he is 16. An unintended by-product of the curse are the red, tattoo-like lines that flare to life all over Hisoka's body whenever Muraki is Up To Something. Anyway, Hisoka, knowing that he was murdered, refuses to just die, and becomes a shinigami, or a sort of ghostly/supernatural detective. He is partnered with Asato Tsuzuki, a victim of Muraki's equally crazy grandfather. Muraki, obsessed with Tsuzuki and his mysterious origins, often uses Hisoka against him, although Hisoka's magical powers, greatly magnified by death, are developing rapidly.
  • Why I luv him: Because he needs love like no tomorrow. The only people who have ever shown him any kindness are all dead, and the only person to stay close to him for any significant period of time is a possibly insane, possibly half-demon, 98-year-old suicidal nutjob.
