For some reason last night I went to bed at 2:30 in the morning, but I was still wide awake. So instead of sleeping, I lay in bed thinking about my life, and the things that mean a lot to me, and what big events will be happening in my future. I started to think about the fact that I have to start saving money up because I'm going to either El Salvador or Africa with my school next year to build houses for the poor and play with the orphans at the orphanage. It was then that I realized that making people happy is one of the main things in my life that make me happy. I always knew that making people happy made me happy, but to make people who are less fortunate then you happy, is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Truly! I have started volunteering regularly as possible at a local homeless shelter, and to be honest, those people are my heroes. I look up to them in so many ways. How can you look up to someone who lives on the streets and has absolutely nothing you ask? That's exactly it. They have nothing! They have to rely on others to put a roof over their head, and food in their stomaches. Without these people who help them they could die on the streets. I live in one of the coldest places in Canada! It goes past -45 degrees WITHOUT the wind sheild. Now most people who don't have a lot can go pretty mad in their life time. People always want to be independent and survive on their own. They want to be able to provide for themselves and for their family without the help of others. So going to a local homeless shelter on a regular basis to get those necessities can drive some people mad. Although 99.9% of the people that I have met at homeless shelters are some of the happiest people I have EVER met in my entire life. That's why they are my heroes. They have nothing and yet they still dance around happy as can be, and not letting the way they have to live their life bring them down. If you really think about it, it can teach you a great deal about life. It can teach you that money isn't everything, and that you don't need Prada, or Gucci. That the simplest of things can be the best. And when you have truly nothing, is when you are the most happy. You always see those millioniares that are as miserable as can be. Also everyone always thinks that they have life so horribly, but there is ALWAYS someone who is less fortunate then you are. So chipper up cause really, you don't have it so badly.
P.S. OH YEAH, and another thing that I witnessed at the homeless shelter that would have drove most people mad, was families that came in to get presents for their kids. Not being able to get your children everything they dreamed of, and having to get your presents donated to you can drive a lot of people more mad then someone who doesn't have food. I helped so many families pick out some of the most adorable presents ever for their children and helped them wrap them. I defiantly would have been the happiest kid alive to get some of those presents. Not only did I start crying when I saw the amount of toys donated in the first place, but seeing the families still chipper as can be, getting presents for their kids. It over-whelmed me. I honestly do not know how they can be so happy like that, but I truly admire each and every one of them for it.
So there you have it. Homeless people are my heroes =] Go to your local homeless shelter and volunteer, even if it's only for a few hours. You won't regret it on bit and it can be one of the best feelings ever! |
