One of the main reasons I very much dislike Halloween is probably unexpected.
I think it teaches greed.
Granted, my favorite holiday, Christmas, is all about greed nowadays as well. That, too, sickens me.
However, it is possible to celebrate Christmas as a time of giving and not of getting; whereas, the point of trick-or-treating is getting.
When people would go out Christmas caroling back in the day (before this somehow offended people), the point was not that they would get anything. Yes, they often did get food or wassail, but this was not the point. And if they didn't get wassail, that was fine. They were there to sing beautiful music to you as a gift of sorts; they were not about to smash pumpkins or egg your car.
But when you trick-or-treat, you only go to get candy or, worse -- if you take "trick-or-treat" literally, as plenty of brats do -- to vandalize the neighborhood.
Is it really wise to send children out with the message, "If you ask people for candy they will give it to you. If they don't they must be grumpy, old fogies with no sense of fun."
Anyhow, just something to ponder that I've not heard anyone mention before.... |
