OMG, such pro-"Azaadi" article in Indian not-so-left media?
Meanwhile Nitin writes : Advocates of a plebiscite and secession though have a duty to articulate what happens next—to Kashmir and to India. Will the Valley’s independence or integration with Pakistan miraculously solve the fundamental problem, or will it merely lead to its reconfiguration? And can any serious advocate of a plebiscite, leave alone secession, plausibly argue that such a move will be free of the immense human tragedy that characterised drawing of new international borders in the subcontinent in 1947 and 1971?
And what next? Kashmir coming under the sway of the Taliban-like forces that hold sway in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s tribal areas; or under a puppet regime that becomes the agent of regional and foreign powers; or under authoritarian rulers like those in Central Asia; or all of the above [See Offstumped]. One thing it will not become is Switzerland. What this implies for India is that the costs will not go away—they will mount. Kashmir is, as Mr Sanghvi puts it, a 20th century problem. But a 20th century solution—for that’s what self-determination is—won’t prevent it from disrupting India’s 21st century future. As for Kashmiris, self-determination is no guarantee that they will not be ruled against their will.
The post does an excellent job of demonstrating why those who harp on Kashmiris' right to self-determination live in some fancy idealistic world of their own.
However I don't see why India's costs will mount if Kashmir is given freedom. Indeed, some from the Valley will try to create trouble in Jammu etc., but clamping down on that will certainly not be nearly as costly. Jammu is economically much better off ( perhaps Ladakh is too, but I am too lazy to check up ). Jammu is Hindu-majority and Ladakh Buddhist-majority. The situation with these would be much better than with Tibet and China, for instance. Further, the cause of Kashmiri freedom is part of the motivating factor for terrorists, and taking this away by giving Kashmir freedom should certainly help India a lot.
And I don't think that the "redrawing of borders" will precipitate immense human tragedy as in 1947 or 1971 either - because there isn't nearly as much scope for migration of people.
However, like Nitin says the problems in the Valley will ( at best ) be merely reconfigured. In fact under Islamist authoritarian rule it is likely to worsen. It is even possible that they may get a Taliban-type Government, say one that bans women from buying "suggestively shaped vegetables". In any case, not being able to trade as easily with India is going to screw their economy big time. But I say, why should we bother? If the idiots prefer Pakistan, they deserve Pakistan. I totally agree with Arundhati Roy that India needs Azaadi from Kashmir. So many of our soldiers keep getting sacrificed there; all because of this wretched Valley. Since the people of Valley so intensely pine for hell, leave them to rot in that - so that we, particularly our soldiers, won't have to suffer so much. |
