First, quickly, I will cover Friday and then get to our London trip today. Friday morning I got up and Jae and I went into the city to finish shopping for Halloween costumes and to get work done at Starbucks since that seemed to work pretty well last time. It worked pretty well again, except that there was a really loud French group of older women hanging out and being loud in general. We stayed there until the baristas started closing things up, and headed home around dinner time. We apparently stole some seats on the Unibus back to campus from some of the freshers. There was a group of about five guys who came and say near us and one of them motioned to the two of us and said "well, guys, these are our new friends who have taken our seats." And we struck up conversation with them. They were really nice, and when we were talking about housing on campus I mentioned the heat in my room. The guy I was talking to, who I thought was named Brett (mostly because he thought it would be rude to correct me when I thought i heard him say his name was Brett...) was actually named Rick. First of all, we got along right off the bat because we were talking about the Office and Ricky Gervais (Who he loves) and he mentioned the episode of Extras with Dan Radcliffe. And he expressed a whole lotta hatred for the Potter boy. And I loved it. So then- back to the heat in my room. I mentioned how stifling the heat was and he told me to turn off the radiator. I assured him that my radiator wouldn't budge, and I was pretty convinced it was broken. He offered to come over and fix the radiator for me, and so he followed Jae and I back to my room and fixed the radiator!!! It was on full blast and twisted so tight I never would have been able to turn it off. I thought it was really sweet of him to come fix the heat, and Jae and I both got along with him really well. Also, he has Doctor Who on DVD... so that's a friendship we'll probably have to pursue. After this whole ordeal, Jae and I decided to go try out the K-bar for dinner, and we had a delicious pizza with chicken and pesto and lots of vegetables. I had a "Children of Darkness" game at 7, so I went to that and it was a total blast!! I wasn't back in my room until 11. I edited my play one final time and submitted it for Playworks at Goucher in the spring. If it gets picked, it will be produced sometime in May, so I really hope it gets picked. *Fingers crossed* Oh, and at one point during the editing process, someone burst through my door and stood there staring at me for a split second before his eyes went super wide and he started apologizing profusely for just barging into the wrong room. I had half a mind to kick him; he scared the shit out of me. After he left, I locked my door.
This morning was supposed to start at 7 AM, but I am a bum and startled myself awake at five of 8. I threw together a warm enough outfit for the day, scrambled to brush my teeth and hair, and ran for the bustop to catch the 8:20 Unibus into Canterbury, where Jae and I took the National Express to London!!! We were both completely exhausted, but really excited. We napped and I read some of "A Wrinkle In Time" on the bus (it's a 2 hour ride!!) on the way into the city. Seeing London for the first REAL time was really exciting. I forgot I was tired as soon as we were there. We had lunch at the Victoria station at a little bagel and coffee shop. It was really cute, because the bagels were billed as American foods. I loved it. I miss bagels. We headed over to the Underground to get to the Barbican center, where the theater is where we saw "The Disappearing Number". A man named Vince (I kid you not) with hair that looked an awful lot like Elvis (in the later years...), a different gold gaudy ring on every finger, and spike bracelets that were probably from Hot topic on both wrists sold us our tickets. Jae and I both felt the need to mention how bad ass he was as soon as we were away from the queue. I was a super nerd after we got our tickets, and got the soundtrack of Order of the Phoenix stuck in my head. As we went through the tills, I mumbled to Jae "Genuis, these muggles" in an Arthur Weasley kind of way. I snickered. She was amused, as well. There was plenty of time to do something before our 2:30 show, so we went to the Museum of London and saw exhibits about the history of... London. They covered the history from just before the Roman Empire up to the Fire of London in the 1700s. We had a really good time, mostly because we're both nerds for museums, but also because the museum is really interactive and accessible. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure we blasphemed all over history, since I kept making Harry Potter references about as frequently as Jae made reference to one science fiction novel or another. After the museum, we headed to the theater and saw the show, which was really really good. It was a multi-media theater production, and the show itself was about mathematics and fluidity and connections in everyones lives. It sounded really pretentious, but it turned out to be quite enjoyable. I have to write a review tomorrow, so I'll post if for anyone interested in reading it when I'm done. After the show, we needed some food, and Jae really wanted to find some doners with actual taste to them. We stopped in at this Greek take-away place and had dinner. Burgers here are disgusting, for the record. I don't know what it is, but the don't even have the same consistency as American burgers. I hate them. A lot. After dinner, we decided to hit up King's cross, since I was probably going to kill the population of the whole city if we didn't do at least one explicitly Harry Potter related activity at all. We saw Platform 9 3/4, and I nearly exploded in excitement. It was just so cool. King's Cross itself is a beautiful piece of architecture, and when we have a little more time when we go back into the city, I'll take some more photos. For today, we had to rush back to the coach station to catch our bus back into Canterbury, and since neither of our cameras was acting particularly cooperative, we just got one kind of fuzzy picture of me looking the happiest I've ever looked in my entire life and running through the barrier. After this, we booked it back to the coach station and caught our bus back to Canterbury. For some reason, the bus was freezing. But we did get to see the Eye all lit up at night, which was gorgeous, and we got to admire the theater at which Wicked is being produced. OH and Sarah Jonas, you're the only one who appreciates this, but I feel the story must be told and documented somewhere. Someone who looks exactly like Sarah was being taken to see Wicked (by who I can only presume was her boyfriend.) They were all dressed up in pretty clothes (the way you SHOULD be for a night time showing... NEW YORK.) and when she saw the theater she just stopped where she was and stared and then waved her arms and had a total excitement shit fit of the scale on which I think Sarah and I are only capable. That was a real sentence, I promise. I'm really glad she was so preoccupied freaking out about the theater, because I was totally staring her down half expecting it to be MY Sarah, and for her to recognize me and freak out all over again.
All in all, an amazing day.
