The Australian 28/9/08 6.52am The fact is that we need the market to work for us, for our interests and our needs, and imposing cheap housing on a grateful poor has been shown to not work.
Instead, we should examine why the market as it stands currently delivers - effectively - urban sprawl. Little blocks containing a stand alone houses and a fenced off plot of grass, with a garage containing a car that has access to a road and thence the freeway to the city proper.

How about a hollow circle of (say) 100+ co-joined townhouses with a parkland* in the middle. How about a dedicated tram or bus service for the entire complex that goes directly to the nearest train station/shopping precinct? How about a cluster of such apartment 'circles' in the 'suburb' feeding into that precinct.
Would you like to live in such accommodation? Yes? So why is it not available?
