[Subaru is asleep. He's been listening to a lot of caroling, and is thus dreaming about sitting happily in a McDonald's restaurant with his friend, Seishirou and his sister, Hokuto and blushing as Hokuto speaks enthusiastically about pairing the two men up.]

... H-Hokuto-chan...! W-we can't! I'm a boy!... Can you please keep your voice down?

[The dream continues with Hokuto leaping up on the table to yell some more about Subaru and Seishirou, while everyone in the restaurant stares and Subaru blushes something fierce in his seat. The dream then changes abruptly to a scene in a park, where a nine-year old child dressed in a shikifuku with a pentagram on the back is standing in front of a cherry blossom tree, at the bottom of which stands a smirking teenager, his face unrecognizable.]

"Do you know why the cherry blossoms turn a pale red?" [little Subaru shakes his head] "... Because they drink the blood of the corpse beneath."

[Subaru's big eyes fill with tears] But isn't that person... in pain? [The teenager looks momentarily surprised, before he smiles down at him.] "I'll make a bet with you..." [A gust of wind passes by, blocking out the sound, and the dream goes back to Hokuto, Seishirou and Subaru again. This time they're in a vet's office where Hokuto is talking about horoscopes with Seishirou, Subaru busying himself playing with a puppy. By now he's realized that he's dreaming, so he looks a little depressed as the puppy licks at his nose.]
