Saw (2004)
Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is a deranged nutter who sets up elaborate games to force people to kill themselves. He sincerely believes he is doing it for the betterment of humanity. His latest two victims are Adam and Dr Gordon. He has them chained up in a grotty bathroom and to survive, one of them will have to make grim use of a saw.
While this is a bit dull at the start, it is fairly entertaining. It has the awesome Dina Meyer, Michael Emerson (of 'Lost') playing another nutjob, Ken Leung (also of 'Lost') playing a doomed cop and Shawnee Smith as Amanda, another of Jigsaw's victims. The scene of her escaping and surviving Jigsaw's trap are good, though as 'Saw 2' proved - it gave her a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome. There are good parts like Stygian Street, Danny Glover as an ex-cop driven mad by the horror of it all but the weakest part of the film is Dr Gordon.
His in and out American accent is one thing, but add in some horrendous acting and the act his character never notices that a dead body isn't actually dead and it all becomes too much.
This is an okay film.
