The Stakes:
For ten years, Eleanor has been held in prison for staging a civil war against her husband, Henry, King of England. During Christmas, she's released to join her family at Chinon, where Henry is due to disclose which of his sons will succeed him. Eleanor favors Richard, who she's gifted with the rich province of Aquitaine--while Henry favors his dullard son, John. Each plot to outscheme the other in order to get what they want; and in this supposedly cordial conversation, the undertones are deadly serious.
