Of course much of this will be dependent upon how the search engines choose to view the new domain extensions but it is no leap of the imagination that they will give special attention to them. For instance, if you did a search on gambling then logical thinking would be that gambling.gambling would fulfill that search request. In fact it most certainly would fill that request and that is not where this writer sees a problem. The problem lies in that every such scenario would be dominated by the deep pockets in that niche that could afford to spend the money in developing a business plan to submit which by some experts estimates could run into the six figures.
Further salt in the wound is that after spending such money to develop a business plan and submit it, there is no guarantee the extension will be granted to that company and there is obviously no way to recover those funds spent on developing the business plan. This means that not only are smaller companies out of luck but also any company that cannot literally afford to spend six figures on creating a business plan and then cast that investment to the wayside without it hurting the companys bottom line to such extent they could not afford to incur such a loss and continue to operate. Bottom line is the registrars have set things up so that only huge corporations can afford to take such risk and therefore almost any worthy niche on the internet stands to fall victim to such ignorant planning. Also hurt by this move will be those companies who spent the big money to acquire a domain which was relevant to their niche such as those people who currently own domains like casino.com or insurance.com, a lot of money was spent to own such domains and dependent upon how the search engines choose to view the new domain extensions, such domains could become worth no more than their equivalents with a .biz, .info or .country extension.
It is a sad commentary on the registrars that they have now put the weight of the internets integrity squarely on the shoulders of the search engines and if they choose to recognize these new domain extensions as being the authority on their targeted niche then it opens up a cash-cow for the corporations owning the domain extensions unlike they have ever seen before since there will be no cap on price gouging. Owners of such domain extensions as .gambling will be able to charge whatever they feel the market will bare if you wanted to buy a domain such as casino.gambling, therefore effectively eliminating the start ups and smaller mom and pop websites from ever having opportunity to own these potentially lucrative domains.
How will this effect the online gambling world? It is likely that if such domain extensions as .gambling or .casino sell domains such as best.casino or top.casinos, that these domains will not be afforded by individuals who up until now were able to compete and these were the websites which you could trust to give unbiased reviews of online casinos therefore helping those wise enough to use these sites from which to choose their gaming establishments, to avoid getting cheated by casinos they would have otherwise had no clue to not patron.
