I just got done reading an article in Guitar World magazine about Nirvana’s last shows leading up to Kurt Cobain’s death. If there was a beginning of the end to his short life, it was his European tour to promote In Utero. You always heard about Kurt’s stomach problems and throat bronchitis that ailed him for much of his final years, but in truth the larger health crisis was his addiction to heroin, and most likely the cause of his hurting body. The reason this European tour was so difficult for kurt, was the trouble he had finding drugs. His withdrawal was bad enough that doctors would prescribe him opiates to cope. His typical melancholy mood turned into that of impending doom! He attempted to break up the band several times, and threatened his life on many occasions, but was always meet with the same reply. “play or get the shit sued out of you!” The band had no cancellation insurance, Nirvana A band on top of the world had little say over their lives. He was often told ” the only way for this tour to be cancelled would be if someone was to die” A chilling prediction of things to come. March 1 1994 in Germany after much of the tour, Kurt got his wish and the tour was cancelled, thus the end of Nirvana. A few days later kurt tried to kill himself with a overdose of pills of a powerful tranquilizer Rohypnol the “date rape” drug. He took three dozen and left a suicide note. Though many news reports announced his death, he was spared. Some should have taken that as a cry for help, but instead he returned home for a month long binge of heroin. Often his drug use was so reckless his drug buddies began to shun him. When one warned that he was using enough dope to kill himself, Kurt replied he intended to shoot himself anyways. After one last try in rehab, which only lasted 48 hours kurt vanished. His last written words in a final suicide note read…It’s better to burn out than to fade away. peace, love, empathy.

Today we’re left with erie reminders of this legend… Dave Grohl screams “pretty veins and bloodshot eyes why did you have to go and let it die!” Kurt never burnt out or faded away he still lives on in his music and our hearts. He was simply a man addicted to drugs, and the drugs got the better of him.
