Ruffles along the staight grain?

Hello! Does anyone know if cutting ruffles along the straight grain (as opposed to the usual cross grain) would yield acceptable results? Or would the ruffles hang strangely? The ruffles would go along the hem of a dress and the fabric is a cotton blend, if that makes a difference. Thank you in advance!
