Mango in Poem

Even though I 'm a author, I hold not composed or read much poesy. Yet, I 'm seeking to open myself to the genre. A great resource is The Writer's Almanac , a free day-after-day electronic newssheet that features a poem along with literary and historical notes. In the December 2 issue , I savored a poem entitled `` Eating a Mango Over the Kitchen Sink '' by Phebe Hanson, from ...

...for Colleen (whose day I love brightening)

(... and rangerpeaches too) Here's one Sherrie heard the other day on the Writer's Almanac on NPR: Shopping Urban by Jane Shore Flip-flopped, noosed in puka beads, my daughter breezes through the store from headband to toe ring, shooing me away from the bongs, lace thongs, and studded dog collars. And I don't want to see her in that black muscle tee with SLUT stamped in gold ...

"I know you get dizzy, but try not to lose your nerve."

Day thirty-two, still cold. There's a community sweater in the staff office, and said sweater has passed from chilly hand to chilly hand as the hours roll by. It's a hideous thing, mustard-yellow, of blobby proportions, but fashion can go hang because, not to put too fine a point on it, it's freaking freezing out there. Keep in mind your heroine is already wearing layers, and still needs a ...

"You talk just like a book."

1) Am besotted with spring evening skies. That such blues exist, and that I can seem them, pays for lots. 2) Reading: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest . Man vs. society. Society wins, but man puts up a helluva fight. Easy to see why this is a 20th-century classic. 3) Also reading: Catullus, in translation. w00t! 4) And also reading: Warrior Politics , Kaplan. 5) Am amused-fond of how ...

Short takes

1) My numbers worked! We now have the delightful problem of spending a whole lot of money in a very short time. 2) I am scheduled to be in three places at the same time this morning. Ergo, I am going in a little early to sort that out. I'm good, grant you, but I'm not THAT good. 3) I'm also a tad disorganized, in case you hadn't noticed. Don't tell them up the street, or they'll come take ...

In which our heroine sleepily returns to the daylight world.

Goodness gracious. Eight hours just didn't cut it last night. Slept in, and am just now brushing away the cobwebs and contemplating pumpkin pie for breakfast. The coffeepot burbles cheerfully, "Why not?" Dinner with the in-laws was quite nice. FiL's condition has advanced noticeably, but he has not yet progressed to the state of the Patriarch, who walked around with silverware in his pockets...

Happy 237th Birthday, J W von Goethe! As I learned today from the Writer's Alamanc it was Goethe who said, "One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words." I fear I said some unreasonable words recently. I fear if I speak again about it I'll make things worse. Maybe I should concentrate on ...

"Steady as she goes."

Ah, a proper weekend. We likes it, precious. Today's plan is to treat oneself to a pair of new shoes, courtesy of a gift card still have not spent (I told you I have a hard time pampering myself, even when you lot give me the tools. Embarrassing). Would like Mary Janes, preferably red, but will take black. Or boots. One can never have enough bad-ass black boots lying about. JMHO, YMMV. One ...

The Writer's Almanac - July 26th, 2007

My cousin, noblwish  , who has very bad tastes in heroes, runs a yahoo group for artistic discussion in the Houston area. Of late, nothing much gets discussed on it, just a lot of forwarded announcements. In an effort to get people on the list to talk about something, it's long been my habit to forward The Writer's Almanac to see if I can get anyone to talk about it. Sometimes it even...

Pretzels, praline, saline, succotash / balderdash, benzedrine, aubergine, dolomite

Outdoor weddings rule. Especially when they're unabashedly unconventional. It was too darned hot, though. Just...appalling. When the sun swung over the yardarm, and the breeze picked up, it was better. Still. Your heroine drank at least three gallons of water (and, okay, one glass of champagne), and was still hot, irritable, and cranky. Fortunately, could sit there and listen to other ...
