Signing #1

... the most recent of her books: Manna From Hades , and she had beautiful cover flats to display. I signed Magic to the Bone and Magic in the Blood and gave away "magic" pens. Several of the Wordos and some of Nina's students showed up, and it was great to see them all. After the signing, I went out to lunch with diannarodgers , JohnBurridge , Nina Kiriki Hoffman , and Dejsha Knight ...

Battle First Draft is OVAH!

..., but I usually get stuck moving from A to C. These books helped me do that. The story as it stands is at least two years old. I'm sure it's older, because it started back in the Wordos when Nina Kiriki Hoffman gave us a prompt for a living house (I found a file dated October 2005 that started one version of this thing). This story has been brewing ever since. I finally have a sense of completion...

Squee! Issue 17/18 of Electric Velocipede arrived!

This is the issue that contains my story The Leaf Gatherer and floatingtide 's story, Jointed . There's a jaylake story there, too. Hmmm. Evidence seems to indicate that Wordos alumni have taken over Electric Velocipede. Perhaps someone should inform John Klima about that.

Manly Man Movie Review: Star Trek

... person offering to buy me a drink, and at a three-to-one ratio of folks wanting to poison said drink. In short, I am not a fan of the orginal series mythos. Many years ago, at the Wordos crit group, a story with a first person narration had a gun pointed at the narrator's head. This was criticized as being unable to generate any tension in the story because we know the narrator will live. Star...

The "New Story," Self Publishing, and other Fantasies

... only a handful of people who seem to be making a name for themselves, and they seem to be part of an "anti-publishing company" business model. I came up as a writer in groups like the Wordos , where the whole point was to write a story so damn good someone paid you money for it. This training in the business side of things prevents me from self-publishing anything. Sure, I tossed out a couple ...

Happy Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Day

... this list on the amount of shelf space these writers take up. These are the people I'm reading the most. On a personal level, to Stephanie (not a writer but my first reader/editor/kicker-of-butt), Kirsten Lincoln, Tina Connolly, Mischa DeNola, Camille Alexa,Jay Lake, Damon Kaswell, and most of the Wordos of 2005-2007, thank you for the encouragement, kicks in the butt, challenges, and advice.

Reboot - Writing

... as point C should be. I feel better about this novel, and thanks to  camillealexa  I have some ideas on getting my short stories ready for some markets. When I started writing I wrote long. The Wordos got me down to small stories under 2K, and when I wrote a story 2,800 words long it felt stretched. But I think I'm breaking this misconception and I have no pretensions of thinking I know ...

Orycon Name Dropping

... it was the lack of money and the small crowds, or the lack of crazy people showing up in costume. I didn't see much. I was hoping  gooddamon  and  floatingtide  would be there. The Wordos didn't even do a group breakfast, but I had a good time breakfasting with  robvagle  and Ximenia (whose name I am 99% sure I am misspelling). I ran into  newroticgirl  and her beau, ...

..., Mark and Melissa Teppo, and others. Made a brief cameo at the Friday cheese soiree where I finally met Jeff Soesbe in person (which was nice). Caught up with Diana Rodgers and Devon Monk (two of my favorite Wordos). Devon's book party was a hoot! She had a giant blow-up of her book cover where you could have your photo taken with the author (which I did). Lots of fun! Nicholas had a good time, ...
