London - good areas to live?

..., I have been looking for flats for us in that area, until some of my uni friends turned around today and told me it's a very rough area, lots of recent trouble with knife crime and gang-stuff (Tamil Tigers etc), which has obviously scared me off completely. :/ I lived in London for a year but I lived in Fulham & Clapham which are lovely areas but totally out of my budget!
