Workout machine sales

My wife wants to buy either an Elliptical or rowing machine, but wants to try them out first. We hit Sports Authority over the weekend, and while they had about 6 Ellipticals, they didn't have a single rowing machine in the store. Tried Sears and found the same thing. I'm not really sure where else to look. Does anyone know of any local stores that carry a decent inventory?
