I borrowed Mark Stein's "How the States Got Their Shapes" from a friend, and I'm glad -- I'd have been disappointed to have spent the hardcover book price for it. It's probably better skimmed than read all the way through. You'll likely find yourself interested in the stuff about the states you know or have a special interest in and much less intrigued with the rest of it.
