I have one of those pesky fic searches for y'all. There was a brilliant fic where Xander could communicate with the dead which I can't seem to find in my favorites. He'd left the Scoobies or whatever and had gone out on his own to do this. I think Angel and Spike had found a prophecy concerning him and Spike stays with him.
