Five Busy Days: A Recap

...bristle brush. From there, we drove down to San Jose to meet up with ktempest , G.’s cousin and thus, the ladies’ cousin as well. She was in town for World Fantasy. We went out to pizza along with Naamen, and I fed the babies on garlic bread and bits of meat from our meaty, meaty pizza. This was a lot of fun and totally worth the drive to San Jo, but boy did it make for a long day. Also...

Topic of the Week: The Chosen One: Fate vs. Free Will

...Chosen One is how confining it can be. Does the fact that a hero has been fated to do something great mean that she has no control over her own story? In his article in Fantasy Magazine , Naamen Gobert Tilahun brings in the concept of One Who Chooses as the antithesis of the Chosen One. The One Who Chooses is active and makes choices that cause or further conflict (think Katsa in Graceling ). ...

Along with sparkymonster , oyceter , Jackie Gross, deepad , badgerbag , and Naamen Tilahun , I participated in a group discussion on racism, RaceFail, and fandom for the Journal of ...the transcripts. I'm sorry about some of the stuff we had to cut for space constraints -- Naamen talks a little about the difference between how "safe space" is used in fandom vs. how...

Pattern recognition: A dialogue on racism in fan communities

... the conversation in a public space, he is marking this public space as a white space, where the white guy gets to announce that his racial anxiety is a concern everyone, especially people of color, should focus on. Naamen Tilahun says: A lot of fans have a different idea of safe space than I and a lot of activists do, I think. Safe space for me has never included the idea that you won't be ...

State of the Hills

... on Saturday by bending down in the bathroom and colliding with the metal key in the door lock. Have I mentioned that I'm a bit clumsy sometimes?! Alas, pennski  is now the unwell one. On Sunday Naamen, a friend from the US (from the WisCon posse) stopped off for a few hours, which was fantastic. But we went out to the local (usually very good) indian restaurant at the bottom of the hill for...

Wiscon Monday

... on for ever as did replyhazy 's jambalaya. By the time we got back to the hotel, half the Dead Cow party was in the corridor, so we joined it. We must make sure to spend time with Naamen in his Grand European Tour. A certain pleasant alcoholic blur set in. We found ourselves joining in the chorus of the pirate song from "Due South" and later sat around in the former con suite enjoying a ...

Wiscon - a con report of sorts

... , and it was good to review with them over dinner on Sunday our perceptions on how Saturday's lunchtime "Allies meeting" went. Not as well as we'd hoped, but some lessons learned for future efforts, I think. Naamen was awesome on the Not Another @#$! Race Panel so I hope to see him more in the future as well - wish I'd gotten to talk to him more off-panel, and such is true with many folks. ...
