Box of Monsters?

We had a patron in, looking for a favorite childhood book and I'm drawing a blank. What he remembers: There was a magician and a boy, and the magician went into town and told the boy not to touch anything. He touched a box and released monsters. The book cover was maroon and almost certainly a picture book. The patron is about 18-20, and he thought the book was older (from the 60s).
