Are you fluent in your Conlang?

... become fluent in mine, which is part of the reason I'm not straying too far from the grammatical structures I'm most familiar with (those of English, Spanish, French and Hebrew). My vocabulary has a few loanwords but mostly I'm making that up on my own. Vocabulary has always been easy for me to learn, but grammar is another story. Anyway, how did you reach your degree of fluency? I assume it's ...

[Multilingual Monday] Kanji Tales, Vol, 7572

... is that the Japanese still use Chinese characters, whereas the Koreans for the most part have gotten rid of Chinese characters as part of their orthography. Both languages maintain a HUGE stock of loanwords from Chinese, but both lack phonetic elements that exist in several Chinese dialects, so even MORE characters end up sounding identical to one another; in written text this poses a particular ...

Is There Anybody Who Knows Creole In The House?

I'm researching my story idea and I need to know if there are any Creole words for the species of snake known as the "water moccasin" or "cottonmouth". I've found general words for "snake" in Creole but they all seem to be loanwords from Euro languages (French, Latin, English, Dutch) that had mutated from generations of adaptation. Just point me to a source, please? FP

[Multilingual Monday] Homphones and Homonyms

...'m unsure with homonyms -- vers is one of the few I can think of ("towards" or "verse"), but I'm sure there are more! JAPANESE: Because of the sheer number of loanwords from Chinese -- a language which contained tones and consonants that Japanese didn't -- many characters have the same pronunciation. Several famous sentences are made with heterographs: 貴社の記者は汽車で帰社した, KISHA no KISHA wa KISHA ...

Is there an active Mandarin-Japanese creole in Taiwan, or does Taiwanese use a lot of loanwords? I was sitting in front of a couple on the bus today who were clearly speaking in Mandarin, but every fourth or five sentence I understood was in Japanese. ちがうな[何]は or a similar phrase was the most common one I picked out. Ideas?
