Giftmas Charity Help

So as the Giftmas season fast approaches, I'm trying to up my charitable habits and I'm wondering if there is anything similar to the Chicago Sun-Times' " Letters to Santa " program ... any way (if I do eventually determine that they do, in fact, do something). So can anyone recommend a direct way to reach needy NYC children this Giftmas with toys and gifts, other than a general toy drive? Thanks!
