...downtownDetroit after dark. Dude, anyone strong enough to lift a washing machine will be just fine on Bagley Street in Corktown at 6:00pm. The woman behind the counter--who was either his wife or some other family member--works just south of Corktown and tried to tell him that it's a nice area. In the end, though, I prefer a Saturday delivery...
The Autumn colors in Corktown this Fall are so vivid that I scarcely can believe they are real. Going on a walk at the end of the day yesterday felt like what I imagine it must be like to take certain recreational drugs that I have never tried. The many-colored homes set them off further. Today's photos.
...is totally a job for the charter commission, and every single candidate for charter commission that I know of is in favor of some sort of election-by-district plan anyway. Exactly which of Corktown's problems aren't being solved because no city council candidate lives in southwestDetroit? And if any neighborhood's problems relate to crime or city services (which they almost universally do), then...
... the 24th I turn twenty-nine years old! I'm not having a party or anything, but growing up I would often have people carve pumpkins at my birthday parties. Turns out, the children's bookstore in Corktown is having an adults-and-children pumpkin carving event on Saturday at 5PM and then a costume parade for kids on Sunday. So if you want to celebratethe last year that I will be 20-something with ...
... a yearly tradition, the costumes will get even better. The music was universally of a very, very high calibre, and I heard a bunch of people I'd never heard before (mostly affiliated with the Corktown Ukulele jam). James Hill, Uke aficionado, dropped in with his partner Anne and totally blew everyone away. The next day I skipped the Artistic Directors' meeting (I've told them 2 years in a row ...
... fell out of the poorly designed box all over the floor. My arm is too fat to fit inside the walls and retrieve the window sash weights that fell inside. One of the sash weights somehow fell off the one window I re-attached it to. Tomorrow morning is that stupid marathon that goes through Corktown where people scream "woo" into megaphones to "cheer on" the runners. AT 7 AM. God damn it.
.... Every structure is clearly outlined, and large businesses and public buildings are actually labled. There used to be a hay market where the old Tiger stadium was. Apparently there was a "Zoological Garden" in corktown just south of that. The Bagley house wasn't even built yet. The storm windows are being installed today. The guys were right on time. I hope the dining room window doesn't become ...
Friday I went to the Lagerhouse and saw Stacy play, she was amazing!!! And I got to see all these other really kewl people too ; ) Emmie, Santa, Lauren tee hee. And of course many others. I went out to the farm, and had fun, even though it was freezing, and I talked to the boy. so it's been good.
I ran my best race of the summerlast night - this was one of my key events that I have trained for specifically. It's a fast 8km with next to no turns, and a net elevation loss. I've done it before, and each year my finish time works out to be almost exactly 35 seconds faster than I would have ran a flat 8k. Since I felt I was in about 28:25 - 28:30 shape for a flat 8km, my goal was to run sub...
I just woke up to a giddy phone call from Jon Strand, an artist who will be my new neighbor when I move with Matt to the other side of Corktown in a few months. Jon's friend and former WDET music host Judy Adams was playing our Zelda and the Unibrows' track "Unreason" ( iTunes link ) on her show on CJAM 91.5 (soon 99.1) as part of their pledge drive. 313 963 6112 ext. 3630 is the number if you ...
