и тут без бурбаков не обошлось

..., fed Bourbakist mathematics and category theory in the 60’s and 70’s as all mathematicians were in France at the time, suffered from abstraction envy. Having completely rejected the probabilistic enterprise as usеless for practical reasons, they composed their own abstract framework for talking about data in a geometrical context. Глянул дальше, а там сплошные стрелки и диаграммы, тысячи их.

Speaker for the Dead

..., there's the clinical, factual approach... and then there are the more dramatic accounts that try to bring up individuals, like pictures of nameless orphans, lists of civilian casualty names, etc. Depending on context this annoys me on some level; did you know them? Do you even care about them as individuals instead of some sort of symbolic thing? Or are you just using a emotionally charged event...

Saw a few movies at the end of 2009

...Fellini though they call Daniel Day Lewis' character "Guido Contini" Fantastic film! I LOVED this. Princess and the Frog: Disney's back! Thanks to Pixar! I thought I'd have more issues with the historical context than I did, but setting it near 1920s New Orleans solved a lot of those problems. Great 2D animation, and this story could not have been done near as well in 3D. Avatar: I LIKED the story...

The Phantom Project: Return of the Phantom from Microprose Games

... try to find all this out on our own, but the gigantic one-character infodump is still a bit much. On the other hand, I'm kind of glad; players who aren't familiar with the story will have some context for what's going on, even if it could have been done a bit more smoothly. Jacques, in fact, knows so much about Erik that I take back the statement that he might be the Buquet character; this poor ...

Blathering on + WIP meme

...of that WIP meme you see every now and then and perhaps encourage myself to finish something I’ve started. I believe the original says something like ‘post one sentence from your works in progress with no context or explanations’, but I’m going to change that to an excerpt of whatever length I feel like and include a short comment on the WIP in question. Because I’m a rebel or something. 1. ...

Michael Cera Talks to Moviefone About 'Youth in Revolt', 'Arrested Development'

... that you have to be watching from the beginning to understand the humor of it, because it's self-referential. It's character-based jokes. If you were to tune into an episode of the second season, and had no context, it may seem hard to appreciate the humor of it. I think on DVD, it's a different thing, where people can go through at their own pace. That's the feeling I get. But with the movie, I...

New! Q&A

...that quilt. 8. What kind of fabrics do you like? (e.g. 40's repo, civil war, brights, solids, batiks) I guess it depends... I know it when I see it! I like all different types, it's all about context. I'm a painter, so I look at the planning and piecing process as akin to that. That said, I do like retro and vintage repros a lot... 9. Who taught you to quilt, or did you teach yourself? I'm ...
