The tattoos anyone?

Hi all! While being stuck on my latest fic I kept wondering about the following (especially after seeing the hi-res screen captures): - did Michael Bay or anyone else ever explain the tattoos/carings/whatever they are? If no, what do you think they are about? Is there a translation? - I think I noticed them on Megs, but what about the other Decepticons? Or even, who among the Autobots has them?...
