Booksellers v. Librarians: GO!

Originally published at lib schooled. . You can comment here or there . [Ed. note: I started writing this at the end of January of 2009 but never published it for whatever mystery reason I may have had at the time. Nearly 11 months later (eep!), a lot of what is written here is still highly relevant, so I'm cleaning it up and pubbing it.] I wish I had some witty story about a patron to ...

Bookstore Events and Book Awards, Oh My!!!

Since Laurie is running around like a Mad Woman, and being true to her inner Mad Woman in the Forest, I thought I would share, once again, her bookstore schedule for this weekend! Yes, it is time for her to travel to Philly for NCTE (no, she is NOT packed yet!). Besides the wonderful conference, she is scheduled to appear tomorrow (Friday) night at a Public Event at Doylestown Bookshop from ...

The history of mail-order book purchasing

... London, they would have had to have ordered their books on the occult from London bookshops. And certainly through the early twentieth century American readers were still often ordering books from across the pond. Yes, browsing bookstores is a pleasure, but it seems poring over catalogs of books is also a well-established pleasure, and I know some booksellers still send out such paper catalogs.

The 2009 Book Tour is OVER!

... to the sales teams, I have seen nothing but good work, and I have tried my best to reciprocate by giving every effort I can to promote the books. Their support has made my job easier to do. I'm also grateful to the booksellers, librarians, educators, and especially the fans for supporting me and my books in the way that you have. I would not be able to do this without you. Thank you all.

Reflections

.... I'm happy that redwoods got some much deserved publicity this year -- from National Geographic especially. I'm grateful to anybody who read OPERATION REDWOOD and took something away from it; for booksellers and teachers who brought me into schools to talk with lots of thoughtful, curious and invariably polite kids; for the support of friends and my loyal family; to Amulet for printing the book...

Sarah Palin Book signing in Cincinnati

...posted here in a while. Thought I would share my book signing experience with you guys. So yesterday, x_1013_x , aintshesweet_x and myself attended Sarah Palin's book signing at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Cincinnati. I absolutely LOVE the way they handle book signings by giving you a line letter in advance (which is basically your reservation in line) when you purchase the book. ...

Harlequin Ho--I mean, Horizons...

...means that the publisher calculates an author's percentage not on the cover price, but on whatever net profits the publisher makes on the book--AFTER deducting any discounts given to booksellers. Wait, you say, discounts--what discounts??? The way the publishing industry currently works is that publishers give retailers and wholesalers a significant discount on books, usually anywhere from 40-60...
