Hi there!
So, pretty weird day today, got up at about 10:30, which is like, 3 1/2 hours later than I used to. Not complaining...but still...pretty weird start to a pretty weird day.
Hot Topics:
Alaska-
I figured now is as good of a time as any to explain this, since I only have a day left to do it anyway :s
On Thursday evening, we (me, mother, and father) are driving up to Indy, and staying the night at a hotel. We're waking up crazy hardcore early, and getting on a plane to LA (which is kind of freaking me out, what with the wildfires and everything). We catch our connecting flight from LA to Seattle where we board our cruise to Alaska Friday afternoon. We're cruising Celebrity this time, which should be an exciting venture, since we haven't before.
My mom asked me what I was most excited about, and I didn't really answer her, other than to agree with her that the food was starting to sound pretty nice. But, honestly, I couldn't come up with an answer. This Alaskan thing is so abstract that I don't even know what to expect. We don't know what the weather's going to be like because Alaska is weird, but even with that aside...Alaska just seemed so untouchable. Of all the places in the world, for some reason I always expected Alaska to not be one that I visited.
But then again, I thought the same about Hawaii until last year's cruise...so...
iLove The New Millenium-
OK, I've always been skeptical of anything that VH1 puts up (and I was reminded of that by their stunningly intellectual commercials...O.o)...but this idea had appealed to me ever since the franchise had started. However, I did not watch the 70s...or 70s volume two...or the 80s, mostly because I didn't live in those eras...but also of course because of my precedential prefudices (wow...government summer school had an impact on my vocab. Thank you daily crossword puzzles.) And then I didn't watch the 90s version because...seriously, who didn't hate the 90s? What a ridiculously terrible period to live in. Luckily, the Ebbinghaus curve will kick in and by the time I'm 40, I won't remember anything from it (not that I willingly retain anything anyway).
But the Millenium version seemed intriguing, so I gave it a shot. Wow. What a great show. Such a fresh and funny, albeit sometimes pessimistic, look on so many of the things that have scarred me for life, whether I asked for them to or not. My favorite commentator was Gilbert Gottfried by a long shot. Seriously, every thing the guy said was hysterical. Of course, the precedent of being Iago in Aladdin didn't hurt either. (OK, the precedent needs to stop here.)
My favorite Gottfried-ism of the night was on the subject of the movie Moulin Rouge...
"I think when they were shooting Moulin Rouge, the director stopped them and said 'Cut, cut. Now, let's do this again, and make it a little more...gay.' Honestly, as soon as the movie was over I ran to Broadway to see A Chorus Line so I would feel more like a man."
...Hysterical...and I even liked Moulin Rouge.
Other:
-Listening to Counting Crows right now. I'm seeing them in concert with Maroon 5 (epik) in August, so I figured I better freshen up on my numerical bird music. Pretty awesome band, I have to admit. Actually, I don't even have to admit it. I choose to admit it. *adds to list of artists to download later*
...and I haven't even gotten to Accidentaly in Love yet...
-Went up to a behavioral hospital today to visit with a foster kid that lived with us for a few months last year. I had almost zero pleasant memories of him, and I was comfortable reassured that no more would arise if he returned (which is a definite possibility).
Pray for me and my sanity.
-Finished Know-it-All today. OK, I have to admit, this book was the source of my knowledge of the Ebbinghaus curve. Actually, I'm not even sure if I used it correctly. But, unfortunately, I returned the book today, so I'm not going to be able to look it up. (OK, I admit it, I'm just too lazy to google it.)
In exchange for Know-it-All, I got Year of Living Biblically. This time around, the same author, A.J. Jacobs attempts to live one year taking the bible as literally as possible. It promises to be an interesting endeavor and, judging by the introduction, Jacobs took away a lot more from this experience and it had a lot more profound impact on his life. Tells you something about the Bible, huh?
Also, I grabbed a paperback copy of The Bourne Identity. These are tricky little turds to track down, and I finally caught one today at the library. I'm not sure which one I'm more excited to read, because both are promising to be totally amazing. (I'll probably start with Year of Living Biblically since there are more than one Bourne books.)
-While on the subject of Bourne, I have to admit, Bourne has had a huge impact on my life. I've only seen the trilogy twice, and it's already on my top ten favorite movies list. (I group trilogies and larger series together so as to allow more vacancy for other movies). I encountered a message board last night on the subject of Bourne vs. Bond...who would win? The general consensus was that if Bond didn't have his gadgets, then the only Bonds that could give Bourne a fight would have been Connery and Craig (a statement with which I agree). But, if any of the Bonds had gadgets, there's no telling who would win.
I agree with this also, because keep in mind...Bourne has gadgets as well: a pen, a rolled-up magazine, small hard-bound book, towel. All of these have been known to kill people in the hands of Jason Bourne.
Overall, I'm giving teh fight to Jason Bourne because I'm not a big fan of reputation. Sure, Bond is legendary, but I look for substance, and since the only Bond movie I've seen is Casino Royale...I'm not in much of a position to admit that there is a lot of substance behind the gadgets and a gadzillion movies and books.
Also receiving credit for my decision is this quote: "Bourne, because I'd rather have amnesia than STDs."
I actually lol-ed at that.
